Fresh from their training experience at Modesto’s Scenic General Hospital Family Practice Residency, Tom Gray and Jim Shiovitz felt it their mission in 1982 to establish a medical group dedicated to the delivery of high quality, comprehensive and compassionate care to families and individuals of all ages, male and female, both for episodic illnesses and for health maintenance. Less than a year later, they were joined by a like-minded Jack Collins, already with 5 years of private practice experience, and the Family Health Care Medical Group of Modesto was born in a parking-challenged office on Coffee Road. The group moved in 1988 to its larger current site at 1320 Celeste, a building designed to create an atmosphere of family, home, and warmth.
Office Manager Marsha Heintz was hired in 1990, and created an accountable professional staff striving to keep patient service paramount, standards maintained to the present day. A few years later, Dr. Roland Nyegaard, a partner from 1992 to 2000 helped cement a Family Health Care legacy by reminding the partners of the importance of employing basic tools in Family Medicine: listening carefully and talking with respect to all patients while honoring the trust placed in the primary care physician; there is constant self-monitoring to ensure that these remain basic cogs in the Family Health Care machine. Certified Nurse Practitioner Kathy Collins with 24 years of experience and Jane Hellman, hired 4 years ago, display the highest level of skill to provide a uniquely personal and complete form of support to physicians and patients; newest partners Nandeesh Veerappa and Tracy Brockman have brought an infusion of youthful spirit, energy, and winning personality while maintaining a commitment to the high quality health delivery and personal service that is the cornerstone of Family Health Care.
Along with these newer additions, the group of talented partners added over the last 25-plus years, including Drs. Scott Goodreau and Jeremy Mesches, each bring new vigor and skills to the Family Health Care panel, and with them changes in contracting, computer systems, marketing, and schedule accessibility have emerged. These adjustments help the group keep up with the many transformations in the health care industry, including updated business standards, data management and information technology needed to guide the group through the 21st century, boosting the group towards a more comprehensive, efficient, and better quality of service to patients. Despite these changes, the health care providers and staff strive to maintain the personal attention and focus on individual needs, in keeping with established Family Health Care standards.
Each new member of the Family Health Care delivery team, support staff, and administration has contributed their unique gifts, but each individual and the group as a whole remains dedicated to the original mission established in 1982. Oppressive changes in government regulation, insurance restrictions and transformations, such as the dramatic shift from fee-for-service reimbursement to the many varieties of managed care, and economic vicissitudes have occurred over the past quarter-century, and the group has made business moves designed to meet the ever-changing needs of the industry and its consumers. However, the Family Health Care Medical Group’s top priority continues to be high-level, responsive medical care delivery and personal attention, which is the heart and soul of this medical team.
